The Texas A&M University EDC manages the EDC student of the year program for TAMU.
Each year, the TAMU EDC invites submissions by TAMU students of all levels for the prize of $500 awarded to the student
deemed to have made the largest contribution to GIS research, application, or development during the previous academic year.
About the EDC Student of the Year Program
The purpose of this competition is to promote GIS research, application, and development by students in fields related to GIS at TAMU.
Submission are invited from current graduate and undergraduate students on any topic in
geographical information systems, geographic information science,
urban planning, computer science, industrial engineering, and any other discipline in which the student's work advances the field of GIS.
Any submission that advances any aspect of GIS is welcome.
We encourage papers on theoretical, conceptual, and methodological developments in GIS as well as on particular innovative GIS applications.
Papers must be based upon original work, completed as an undergraduate or graduate student, relevant to the field of
GIS and current GIS research.
Submissions must be written entirely by the applicant.

March 25, 2013 - Extended Abstract and Supplemental Materials Submission Due
Awards
One first place winner will be selected on the basis of the quality of extended abstracts and other supporting materials
and provided with a $500 award courtesy of Esri.
The awards committee reserves the right to not offer such prizes if the papers are not of sufficiently high quality.
The 1st place awards will be decided on the basis of the written submission and any other supporting materials submitted which can include
anything which showcases the student's work - a demo system, a website, an installable application, a video, etc.
Eligibility
The competition is open to TAMU students at all academic levels.
Any submission authored by a student is eligible for the competition,
including papers published or work presented in the last 12 months.
Judging
Student submission will be judged by a subset of the TAMU EDC Faculty on several criteria:

Potential contribution to the field of GIS

Innovation
-
Originality
-
Appropriate use of methodology
-
Scholarship
-
Organization
Judging will take into account the academic level of the applicants.
Guidelines for Applications
To be considered for participation in the GIS paper competition, an extended abstract must be submitted (three pages maximum).
Electronic submission of the extended abstracts is required (in Microsoft Word format or PDF,
with 12-point Times New Roman font, one-inch margins, and single-spaced lines).

Supplemental materials may be submitted in support of the Extended Abstract.
Guidelines for Extended Abstracts
Extended abstracts, including the related bibliography and associated tables and figures,
must be submitted in the format used by the International Journal Geographical Information Science
(see http://www.tandf.co.uk/journals/titles/13658816.asp for details).
The maximum length of the extended abstract can be three pages including all reference, figures, and tables.
Guidelines for Supplemental Materials
In addition to an extended abstract, students are encouraged to submit other material that that showcases their work.
This could include a link to a website, a video of the demo system, an installable application, or any other product developed by the student relevant
to their application. Supplemental materials are not required but highly recommended.
